Marathi films are getting bigger in terms of money. And veteran director-producer-actor Mahesh Manjrekar’s latest offering, Faqta Ladh Mhana is the latest to join the list. Manjrekar has spent more than R four crore on his film.
“If a film really needs a big budget, we should go all out and support it,” he says. “For this film, I got high-end digital cameras that are generally used in Hollywood. I used three to get perfect action sequences. If a movie is worth it, then costs are also worth it.”
Manjrekar, who has also directed several Bollywood hits like Astitva (2000) and Vaastav (1999), says that the action in his film is on the scale of a Hindi film. “I am satisfied with the film. The response is positive. When I heard (director) Sanjay Jadhav’s story, I believed in it and was immediately hooked. He hasn’t let me down. In fact, Sanjay has confidently done a nice job,” he says.

Besides Manjrekar’s film, Avadhoot Gupte’s upcoming Morya, Bharat Gaikwad’s Dhava Dhav (2009) and Neelima Lonari’s Guldasta have also apparently cost more than a crore. But Manjrekar isn’t surprised. “I think a lot of factors including younger filmmakers, newer storylines and fresher settings are changing the look of Marathi cinema. And it’s a positive change,” he says.
