Actor and Trinamool Congress MP Mithun Chakraborty returned Rs 1.19 crore, the amount that he earned as the brand ambassador of Saradha group, to the enforcement directorate on Tuesday.

The actor sent his lawyer with a draft of Rs 1,19,88,560 to the CGO complex in Salt Lake where the ED office is located on the day of his birthday.

The Trinamool MP was questioned by ED officials earlier in May in connection with the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam and he assured them that he will pay back the money that he earned from the tainted group as brand ambassador fees.

Though Chakraborty, who is known for his philanthropy and timely filing of IT returns, did not speak to the media on his association with Saradha group, it is learnt he told his close friends that he will not allow his reputation to be sullied by the money that he earned from the Saradha group.

Chakraborty told ED officials during his interrogation that his association with the Saradha group was purely professional and that he had no intention of duping anyone.

The Saradha group that raised more than Rs 2,500 crore from at least 1.7 million depositors sank in April 2013, ruining numerous small-time investors mainly in West Bengal, Tripura and Assam.
