Nepal's state-run airline, the Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation (RNAC), has suspended its flights to Hong Kong because of the SARS outbreak and decided to fly more often to Mumbai to make up the loss, officials said on Tuesday.

The three-week suspension will go into effect from the weekend, said RNAC General Manager Mohan Prasad Khanal.

The airline had last week announced it was suspending flights to Singapore and Shanghai.

The flights were suspended mainly because of a dramatic drop in passengers to and from these destinations.

"After suspension of the flights to Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong, RNAC has decided to increase its flights to Malaysia and Mumbai to make up the loss incurred in the suspended routes," Khanal said.

There will now be four flights a week instead of two between Kathmandu and Malasia and three a week instead of two to Mumbai, he said.
