Modi blamed the Congress and the Chautalas from the INLD in his relentless election campaign for encouraging dynastic politics and nepotism in the state, asking the people to elect a BJP government with majority in the October 15 assembly polls.

“We want to make Haryana free from this parivaarvaad (dynastic politics). In the last 25 years, have you seen a government in Haryana which worked for the welfare of the people?” he said at a rally in Hisar.

The BJP is trying to shrug off recent bypoll upsets in various states and pick up the electoral momentum from its impressive Lok Sabha poll performance to wrest control of Haryana where the Congress hopes to retain power for a third consecutive term.

He asked the election commission to look into reports that the state government authorised a land deal between Vadra and real estate major DLF, which was cancelled in 2012 by Ashok Khemka, a senior IAS officer from the state.

Modi said his government was running with the support of the nation’s 1.25-billion population and he did not need the backing of those in jail, in an apparent reference to INLD leader and former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala. Chautala, who was convicted in a teachers’ recruitment scam, is out on bail on health grounds and is campaigning for his party.

“There is a need to rid Haryana of bahubalis (musclemen) so that the common man gets good governance, the elderly are given respect and women are provided security,” he said.
