Politics over land has heated up with opposition leaders wasting no time in lapping up the Supreme Court verdict.
Former minister and BJP leader Nawab Singh Nagar, said, "We stand vindicated. But it's just the beginning. The Bahujan Samaj Party will pay heavily in the next assembly election."
Leaders recently alleged the state had gone about forcible acquisition by revoking Section 5 (option of filing objections) under the clause of extraordinary emergency situations. They said this could be done in case of projects, which are in public interest, but this clause was used to muffle voices and promote builders.
This forced chief minister Mayawati to come up with a new land acquisition and rehabilitation policy last month.
She said private players will have to directly acquire land and the government will only act as a facilitator.
She said farmers would be given 16% (of total land acquired) of the developed land plots. But the "politics" has not stopped.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi said during his chaupal meetings in Gautam Budh Nagar district that farmers in Noida and Greater Noida could not sell land directly to builders.
"Announcement of the new policy is an eyewash. This is not applicable to industrial townships," he said.
