Karat has been selected as the chairman of a political organizational committee. "Earlier it was a cell, now it has been turned into a committee," said a source.

As reported by HT last month, Karat would not handle party affairs in any state, it was decided.

While one section of the party claimed that Karat-led panel has been entrusted with the job of preparation for the upcoming Party Plenum, another section claimed that he would have a wider role.

The two day-long central committee meeting was the first such event after Sitaram Yechury took over as the party chief in April.

The CPI-M has also changed its state-in-charge for Delhi. Brinda Karat, politburo member, will handle the affairs in the AAP-ruled national capital.

Kerala’s former education minister MA Baby will oversee its student and youth wings, SFI and DYFI, respectively. Newly elected politburo member Md Salim will be in charge of Jammu and Kashmir.
