If you are facing a threat to your life, and want to seek police protection, get ready to shell out more.
According to the latest home ministry order, there has been considerable hike in charges for hiring a uniformed security official for an eight-hour shift — over 100% for hiring constables and about 70 per cent hike on an average.
Individuals and organisations, who face threats to their lives, request the police to provide them private protection, and the police charge for proving such specialised services.
About 5,042 individuals and 7,066 autonomous institutions availed such services between 2007 and 2009.
And the recent hike in charges for providing such specialised services is good for state coffers.
“The change in the rates to avail such services has increased and it will bring about 74-78% increase in the revenue of the home department,” said home minister RR Patil.
The rates are different for individuals and autonomous institutions and will increase accordingly, Patil said.
It will cost any individual `2,089 to hire a police sub-inspector for an eight-hour shift, a 105 per cent increase from the previous amount of `1,021 per shift; hiring a police guard will cost `1,139 per eight-hour shift for an individual as compared to earlier `574, which is 104% increase.
Explaining the hike in charges, Patil said, “The rates have increased as we have shifted the pay scales of the policemen from the 5th pay commission to the 6th pay commission. People who want to get police security will have to pay more for it,” Patil said.
