The government is yet to receive a letter from Tulsi, saying he was resigning as special counsel in the Supreme Court, whose directives led to the probe into the fake encounter case.

"He has, however, informed our other counsel in the Supreme Court that he may not continue in the post," a senior official said. "We have a number of senior advocates to pick from and Ranjit Kumar is one of the probables, who can be entrusted with the brief," he said.

"Once we receive a formal letter from Tulsi, a decision on his replacement would be taken," the official added.
