Unable to induce schools to introduce a 100 per cent fee waiver for girl student who are also the only child of their parents, the CBSE has now declared a new scheme. The Board has now decided to award monthly scholarships of Rs 500 to all such students attending CBSE affiliated schools in Class XI and XII, provided they score above 60 per cent marks in their Class X exams. But the scheme will be extended to only those students who attend a school that does not charge more than Rs 1,000 per month as fee. The money will be transferred to individual bank accounts in the students’ names. “The CBSE will pay for the scholarships from its own kitty. We have already asked schools to send us the names of single girl children studying with them by May 31,” said CBSE chairperson Ashok Ganguly.Ganguly said offering the scholarships to single girl children who go to expensive schools was futile. There was a lot of resistance from private schools over the implementation of the 100 per cent fee waiver,” he added. HTC, New Delhi
