Security has been tightened at the Madurai airport in view of the Republic Day, P Manohar Superintendent of Police said on Saturday.

He said vehicular searches were being carried out at the entry points to the airport. In addition to the CISF personel manning the airport premises, two guards armed with automatic weapons would be put in place at the entry and exit points.

Metal detectors had been placed at the entrance and regular baggage check had been intensified, he said, adding entry of visitors into the lounge was banned since January 15.
