The task force told the magistrate court that Ijaz was a Pakistani spy who was passing on the country’s secrets. He has currently been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

Ijaz, who was arrested near the Meerut cantonment railway station, allegedly told police that the Pakistani ISI works like the Islamic State.

“Since sensitive documents have been found on him, including crucial maps of key and strategic locations the security has been beefed up around army locations and establishments like in Bareilly and nearby districts,” a senior intelligence officer said.

Sources said documents recovered from the agent at the time of his arrest included details about army locations in Bareilly.

The evidence has put security agencies on high alert, the officer added, especially since there was an attack on a CRPF camp in Rampur a few years ago.

According to the special task force, Ijaz originally hails from the Irfanabad area of Islamabad, Pakistan and is an expert in photography and video mixing. He was trained by the ISI and was sent to Bangladesh from Karachi with a Pakistani passport in January 2013. On February 9, 2013 with the help of Probeen, a Bangladeshi national, Ijaz sneaked into India and reached the house of Muhammad Irshad of South 24 Pargana, West Bengal.
