During Ramzan, the pre-dawn meal is as important as the evening iftar. Here are some sehri ideas to excite everyone — those who are fasting and those who enjoy a breakfast feast

Of all the feasts in the world, the meal partaken to begin or break a fast is often the most emotionally charged one. So it is during Ramzan — the Muslim month of fasting that begins with the sighting of crescent moon — when the festivity is centred on the sight of sumptuous food. While the sunset meal has become hugely popular with iftar parties being thronged by those who fast and their non-fasting friends too, the sehri or pre-dawn meal remains low-key, owing to its timing.

Traditionally, in Muslim households, the sehri has always been a thoughtful, often elaborate preparation that aimed to fortify the body for the day of fasting that lay ahead. Today, though sehri has become a quick affair, care is still taken to ensure the meal is rich in protein, nutrients and is filling, commonly incorporating milk, dates, fruit and eggs.
