The benchmark Sensex failed to hold early gains and lost over 40 points on Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday on profit booking by funds.

The 30-share sensitive index, which opened 77 points higher fell back to record 41.42 points at 11,461.20 points in first minutes of trading.

Similarly, the wide based National Stock Exchange, Nifty, declined by 19 points at 3364.60 points.
