The child, whose parents are labourers, was sleeping last night in the basement near a hospital, where his pregnant mother had been admitted.

When the child's father left the place, located in the Anantapur locality near Yelahanka, the canines pulled away the child and mauled him to death, they said.

Bruhut Bangalore Maharanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner Siddaiah visited the spot and ordered officials to rehabilitate the family.

Expressing shock over the incident, Siddaiah said he would consult Bangalore mayor Sharadamma on the quantum of compensation to be paid to the family.

The affected family, hailing from Bihar, has been working in the city for about two years, they said.
