Suspended Janata Dal (United) legislator Manorama Devi, accused of violating Bihar’s prohibition law, was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days after she surrendered before a Gaya court on Tuesday morning.
Devi had gone absconding after police reportedly found liquor bottles at her house during a raid conducted in connection with the alleged murder of a teenager by her son, Rakesh Ranjan alias Rocky Yadav, earlier this month.
The legislator, who was suspended from the party after a case was lodged against her under the Bihar Excise (Amendment) Act, failed to get anticipatory bail on Monday.
Aditya Sachdeva, the 18-year-old son of a businessman, was driving home from a birthday party with four friends in a Maruti Dzire on May 7 when they overtook Rocky’s Land Cruiser on the Bodh Gaya-Gaya stretch. An incensed Rocky chased down the vehicle and roughed them up. It was when the five tried to escape in their car that Rocky allegedly fired a bullet through its rear windshield — killing Sachdeva.
Rocky’s father, Bindi Yadav, and their bodyguard were arrested in connection with the case soon after. Rocky’s friend Teni Yadav, who was allegedly present on the scene of the murder, was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days on Monday.
