Trinamool Congress legislators on Thursday, unleashed violence in the West Bengal Assembly, pulling down mikes and upturning furniture, after party supremo Mamta Banerjee was forcibly stopped on her way to Singur for a rally against a proposed Tata Motors car project.
The party has called a 12-hour shutdown on Friday. Mamata was on her way to Singur in Hooghly district, where the state government is acquiring farmlands for the Tata Motors small car project, to perform a symbolic Lakshmi Puja on behalf of the peasants threatened with eviction when she was stopped by policemen at Maitipara in Howrah.
A scuffle followed in the area. Trinamool legislators in the assembly, angered upon hearing the news, started throwing chairs and tables. Mamata reached the assembly a little later and squatted in protest at the venue. She addressed a press conference at the assembly and announced a 12-hour shutdown by her party on Friday.
Trinamool Congress activists soon took to the streets and blocked roads and torched vehicles in many places. On Kalighat bridge, in south Kolkata, near Mamata's house a police motorbike was set on fire. Congress leader Manas Bhuniya said his party would support the shutdown on Friday.
Another Congress leader Subrata Mukherjee, who belongs to the group of central minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, said the Congress would actively support the strike by taking to streets.
