V Thilagar, general secretary of Pattali Thozhir Sangam, one of the two recognised trade union in the NLC, said if no progress was made in resolving the issues, nearly 16,000 workers including, technicians and office staff, would strike work from June 15.

Other recognised trade union in the NLC is DMK's Labour Progressive Front (LPF).

Joint Action Council of 13 other trade unions, including HMS, CITU and INTUC, had served separate strike notice about two weeks ago on the same issue.

Thilagar said wage revision was due from January 1, 2007. Though 25 rounds of bipartite talks between trade union leaders and management were held, no agreement had been signed till now, he said.

The management had agreed to give three per cent increment, 40 per cent common allowance and 12 per cent mines allowance. But, instead of calculating the arrears from January 1, 2007, the management had said it would pay increment arrears for only nine months and allowance for five months. This was not acceptable to the trade unions, Thilagar said.
