Police have arrested two people after a 15-year-old girl killed herself in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district following inaction by authorities over allegations that she was gang-raped by her mother’s political rivals to reportedly avenge a loss in the local body elections.
The girl was allegedly abducted on Wednesday night by two brothers of a local leader – whom her mother defeated in the block development council polls recently – who took her to a nearby field and gang-raped her.
When she returned home, she narrated the incident to her mother, who took her to the Padari police station and urged the station house officer to register an FIR. But the officer refused to lodge a complaint, giving the girl verbal assurance and asking the family to return home.
The girl committed suicide hours later, pushing the police into action. An FIR was lodged against the accused- Pappu Baheli and Bindu Bahelia on Friday. The duo was produced in court the next day and sent to judicial custody.
“The district administration has taken cognizance of the inaction by the in-charge of Padari police station. The mother of the victim went to police station but the cops did not register her complain. Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Arvind Mishra has been directed to probe the matter and submit a report. Once the inquiry officer submits his report, action would be taken against erring cops,” said superintendent of police for Mirzapur Arvind Sen.

{{/usCountry}}He added that a panel of doctors performed a post-mortem of the body on Saturday but said the autopsy report didn’t confirm rape.
“The viscera of the dead body would be sent for laboratory tests,” Sen said.
