Around 115 metal nails, a pellet and metal wire were removed from the body of a 42-year-old man during a surgery in Rajasthan’s Bundi. Doctors said the man may have swallowed these items.
The man, who is taking treatment for mental illness, has four sons and lives in a joint family.
Dr Anil Saini, senior surgeon of Bundi district hospital who removed these items from the man’s body on Monday, said the nails are 6.5 centimetres long. “He was brought to hospital with complaint of pain in the abdomen,” the surgeon said.
The presence of nails and metal wire was detected in the X-ray. A CT scan was done to confirm the findings. Dr Saini said he was surprised to find such long nails in the man’s body.
The doctor said the patient was not in a situation to say anything about how these items may have found their way into his body.
The man’s younger brother said the man wandered around the city. “He would leave the house in the morning and return at night. We have no clue how these items got into his body,” said the brother, who is a vegetable vendor. He said the man has been taking treatment for mental illness for 25 years.

Earlier, a similar case was reported from Bundi a couple of years ago in which 150 stationery pins were recovered from a 56-year-old man’s body. The pins were found in the neck and limbs of the man , who also had mental illness.
