CBI sources said Roy sent an e-mail to the central investigative agency’s Kolkata office on Wednesday night and informed it that its officers could call him for interrogation on any day after that date.

HT has learnt from CBI sources that Roy has also sent a hard copy of the same message to the CBI officers in Kolkata through fax. “You can call me on any day after January 28. I will be free to go to your office,” sources quoted from the e-mail.

The CBI had asked Roy, who was then in Delhi, on January 12 to appear before it in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam. On January 14, Roy sought 15 days for appearance but the CBI gave him time till January 21 — a deadline that expired on Wednesday night.

Sources said Roy told a section of the media in Delhi on Wednesday that he would return to Kolkata on Thursday but was unlikely to appear before CBI officers before January 27.

According to sources, Roy wants to stay on in Delhi for a case that the state government has filed in the Supreme Court. Opposition leaders, however, said it was nothing but a part of Roy’s tactics to avoid the CBI.
