The Amboli police on Monday lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against wrestler Narsingh Yadav, who is serving as an assistant commissioner of police with the Maharashtra Police, after he was allegedly found campaigning for the Congress on Sunday night with Congress leader and Mumbai North West candidate Sanjay Nirupam. Yadav will face departmental proceedings, the police said.
HT tried to contact Nirupam, who was unavailable for comment.
According to the police, a team from their station as part of bandobast duty was posted during Nirupam’s campaigning in Yadav Nagar in Andheri (West) on Sunday night.
A police officer said, “Yadav shared the stage with Congress leaders. As per the law, no officers are allowed to campaign for any political party. After we saw it, we alerted our seniors and a report was sent to the Election Commission soon after.”
On Monday, an FIR was registered under sections 129 (2) (Officers, etc., at elections not to act for candidates or to influence voting) of the Representation of People’s Act against Yadav. A departmental inquiry will also be initiated against Yadav.
In 2012, Yadav was selected for the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police in Maharashtra Police. He became eligible for the Class I job after winning the Commonwealth gold medal in 2010. However, he could not take the post in 2010 as he had not completed his graduation.
