Despite temperature crossing 43 degree Celsius, Jodhpur parliamentary seat where Congress candidate and chief minister Ashok Gehlot’s son Vaibhav is pitted against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate and union minister Gajendra Singh Sekhawat saw a high voter turnout of 68.41 %.
Jodhpur was one of the 13 Lok Sabha seats that voted on April 29; the state, which has 25 seats will go to polls for its remaining 12 seats in the fifth phase (May 6) of the seven-phased elections, which end on May 19.
Long queues were seen at polling stations throughout the day, as men and women and persons with disabilities braved the heat to cast their votes.
The administration put up tents to shield people from the sun and made arrangements for drinking water.
No violence and a very few instances of electronic voting machines (EVM) malfunction were reported.
Gehlot and son, among other family members voted early in their booth located at Mahamandir area.
Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also voted with the family members.
He said the media has made this an election between prime minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Ashok Gehlot, while this election was one between nationalism and dynasty. Gehlot, who spoke to reporters after casting his vote said that the Congress will win in the state, as BJP was contesting on non-issues.
