Nakul Nath, 44, was the Congress candidate for Chhindwara, home turf of chief minister Kamal Nath.
Both contested the parliamentary and assembly bypoll elections (respectively) on Monday. Chhindwara was one of the six Lok Sabha seats that went to polls on April 29; the state, which has 29 seats will vote for the remaining 23 seats in the next three phases.
As per rules, Kamal Nath, 72, is required to get elected to the state assembly within six months in his office.
Nakul Nath was pitted against Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Nathan Shah while nine-time MP Kamal Nath contested against BJP’s Vivek Sahu in the bypoll. In 2014, Kamal Nath defeated BJP’s Chaudhary Chandrabhan Singh by a margin of more than 116,000 votes. He was defeated once, in 1997, by the then BJP candidate Sunderlal Patwa.
