Former JNU students’ union leader Kanhaiya Kumar had a message for his opponents in Begusarai after he cast his vote in the parliamentary constituency in Bihar, which is polling in the fourth phase of Lok Sabha election.
Kanhaiya Kumar is making his electoral debut as the Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate for Begusarai, where the left party was once dominant. He is contesting against BJP leader Giriraj Singh in Begusarai.

“Begusarai ko badnam karne wali takton ko Begusarai mein muh ki khani padegi (Those who maligned Begusarai will be defeated here),” Kanhaiya Kumar said after voting.

The CPI dominated the area politics from 1956 to 1996 during which it won multiple times from Lok Sabha constituencies of Begusarai and erstwhile Balia, whose five assembly seats fell into Begusarai district and has been since broken up and merged with adjoining Lok Sabha constituencies.
Now, the party is battling for survival, having lost the 2014 parliamentary elections and failed to win any of the seven assembly seats in the Begusarai Lok Sabha seat in 2015.
“… Here helplessness crept among the cadre due to global unacceptability of the Left. It is a ‘dhakkosla’ (sham) that some attribute the decline of the Left to caste-based politics, which existed even earlier as well. However, things are different now. Globally, there has now been a new Left emergence,” Kanhaiya Kumar said while speaking to HT earlier.
Begusarai is among the five parliamentary constituencies in Bihar, which are polling in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha election 2019. The votes will be counted on May 23.
