A day after the Election Commission (EC) announced dates for the Lok Sabha polls, chief minister Yogi Adityanath donated 2.51 lakh from his salary account to the party’s ‘samarpan kosh’ to indicate the party’s desire to reduce the dependence on what a BJP leader described as “money bags.”

Adityanath also urged the party ministers, lawmakers, mayors and others to follow suit.

Taking cue, the ministers too indicated their desire to do the needful.

“All of us will follow this initiative for a noble cause,” a senior BJP leader said. In February, Yogi and other BJP leaders and ministers had made contributions to the party fund though back then the party had said anyone could contribute between 5 to 1000 to the party fund.

Adityanath and other top ministers and leaders in the state had contributed 1000 for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also exhorted the cadre to make contributions through NaMo app.

“This is the CM’s gesture against black money and to reduce dependence on money bags,” said Mrityunjay Kumar, advisor to the chief minister.

In February BJP chief Amit Shah had said, “We need to stay away from the businessmen if we want to keep our party clean…there are seven states that run their offices with the interest earned on deposits generated through donations. Our aim should be to get workers to donate at least 1000 through NaMo App,” he had said.
