The Akola Lok Sabha constituency, one of the 48 in Maharashtra, was once a Congress bastion but has been represented by the Bharatiya Janata Party for the past three terms.
Sanjay Shamrao Dhotre of the BJP won the 2014 Lok Sabha election by a handsome margin of over two lakh votes and defeated Hidayat ulla Patel of the Congress
Prakash Yashwant Ambedkar of the Bharipa Bahuja Mahasabha who held the seat in 1991 stood at the third spot.
The general elections will be held across India in seven phases beginning April 11 and the counting of votes will take place on May 23.
