The family of deputy chief medical officer (CMO) Dr YS Sachan cremated his body after receiving the postmortem report on Friday. The family had earlier refused to conduct the last rites, appealing to the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad high court for a second postmortem. But rejecting the appeal, the court ordered the government to hand over the report to the family.

Sachan, the prime accused in the murder of CMO, family welfare, Dr BP Singh, was found dead in the jail hospital on Wednesday.

Police said he hanged himself, but the postmortem report revealed that the body was hanged after Sachan had died. His body bore eight incisions and he had bled to death, the report said.

Alleging Sachan was murdered, his family had filed an appeal in court demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). A petition seeking CBI investigation into the murders of CMOs Dr VK Arya and Singh is pending in court. Clubbing the fresh application with it, the court said the matter would be taken up on July 18. Sachan's brother Dr RK Sachan said the family would press for a CBI inquiry. The autopsy report, he said, proved his brother's death "was murder". But the government was in no mood to relent.

The State Human Rights Commission, has meanwhile, issued notices to five senior officials, asking whether Sachan's death was a case of suicide or murder.
