The main draw of this female-centric action comedy is that it’s co-written and directed by a woman (Susanna Fogel) and features two gifted comediennes (Mila Kunis-Kate McKinnon) in the lead roles. Unfortunately, The Spy Who Dumped Me offers little by the way of humour and even less in terms of excitement, during its inflated two-hour runtime.
The clunky script zeroes in on a pair of 30-something best friends who unwittingly get embroiled in an international espionage operation. Entrusted with a top-secret device that needs to be delivered to a contact at a café in Vienna, the novice spies-by-accident must also contend with a team of deadly assassins on their trail
Cue car chases, gratuitous violence and sprints across scenic locations in Berlin, Paris and Prague. No prizes for predicting if the gal pals survive the several life-threatening encounters.
The buddy flick is intermittently enlivened by the kooky antics of Kunis and McKinnon. The latter, in particular, is a hoot. Overall, though, The Spy Who Dumped Me is a downer.
