After special admission round, only 3,500 Mumbai FYJC college aspirants left without seats

More than 16,000 students among 19, 500 applicants waiting for seats in first-year junior colleges (FYJC) were allotted places in the first special round in the online admission process on Wednesday. The Maharashtra education department will announce the next round soon, to accommodate students who have not got seats yet.

The special round, which began from August 13, was meant for students who had not been allotted seats in the last rounds. Those who were allotted seats can now approach the colleges to finalise them on August 18 and 19.

After four admission rounds between July and August, more than 19,000 of 2.3 lakh applicants were left without a seat. These included more than 2,000 students — who were not allotted any seats in the four rounds — 8,000 — who did not accept the seats assigned to them — and 10,000 — who were eliminated from the system as they did not finalise their seats though they were assigned their first choice.

Education officials said they will ensure all students are allotted a seat. “Students who have accepted admission to colleges in the general category or quota could not apply in this round. We will now think about planning more rounds for other students,” said BB Chavan, deputy director of education, Mumbai region.
