Ahead of the monsoon, the Central Railway (CR) has identified 19 locations that are prone to water logging in the tracks. To avoiding disruption in the suburban services because of submerged tracks, CR authorities have planned to install 27 pumps at these locations.

The water logging spots identified on the main line are Masjid, Mazgaon yard, Byculla, Curry Road, Sion, Kurla, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Nanipada, Thane and Dombivli, the spots on the harbour line are Sewri, Wadala, Chunabhatti and Kopar Khairane. (HT file photo)

Besides this, two more locations are between Kalyan and Karjat.

CR informed that it will install 27 pumps of 12.5HP (horse power) and 32HP at these locations before June. Also, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation was going to install 16 pumps at 15 low lying areas such as Mazgaon yard, Masjid Bunder, Saibaba Mandir Byculla, Chinchpokli station and Parel station, among others.

CR also installed flood level indicators at the locations.

“To ensure smooth services during the rains, CR is taking steps such as the removal of muck, cleaning culverts and drains, trimming trees, scanning boulders, provision of multi-section digital counters and others,” informed a CR official.

To avoiding disruptions because of trees or boulders falling on the tracks, the CR said that it had already trimmed the branches of trees at 700 locations and scanned 604 locations to prevent boulder from falling. The railway has installed 950 multi-section Digital Axle Counters on both main and harbour lines. These are sensors installed in the tracks to count the wheels and they help trains run.
