Another female doctor manhandled in Mumbai hospital

A female doctor was allegedly manhandled at Sion hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Even as nearly 4,500 medicos in Maharashtra continue to abstain from work over assaults on them, a female doctor was allegedly manhandled at Sion hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday.

It was the second such case in the hospital in the past four days. The attack came at a time when the residents doctors and the government were tantalisingly inching closer to break the deadlock.

According to the police, a four-month-old girl was hospitalised with pneumonia. “At 8.30 pm, the mother of the girl along with other relatives roughed up Dr Mansi Patil as they alleged that the patient wasn’t given proper treatment,” said a police officer.

Other doctors at the hospital gathered at the spot and the police were informed.

The police detained the mother, but Dr Patil did not file a complaint, saying she will raise the issue with hospital authorities.

Junior doctors in Maharashtra are on strike for the last three days to protest the rise in violence against them by relatives of patients. Maharashtra medical education minister Girish Mahajan warned the striking doctors to join duty by Wednesday evening or face stern action, including salary cut for six months. The warning failed to break the deadlock as more than 4,500 doctors have stayed away from work. Boosting their cause, Indian Medical Association has also backed the strike.
