Hoping to open Mumbai Metro 7 by 2019, Maharashtra to invite bids for coaches

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will soon invite bids for coaches for two Andheri-Dahisar metro corridors, Metro 2A and Metro 7.

Last week, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis surveyed construction work and said he was pleased with the progress.

On May 3, first U girder was put up for the 16.5km Metro-7 corridor in Fadnavis’ presence. The girder is a concrete structure on which the tracks will be laid. Metro 7 elevated corridor will need around 1,400 girders.

Senior MMRDA officials said that Metro 7 corridor could be operational in 2019. “The chief minister was satisfied with the progress.

The work is progressing at a good pace and we plan to complete the construction by the end of 2018. We are going to invite bids for coaches by May end,” said UPS Madan, metropolitan commissioner of MMRDA.

“It will take about six months to invite, evaluate and accept bids and around a year for
the first set of rakes to arrive. So, we may be able to complete the work in 2019,” said an official.

Metro-7 is expected to cost Rs6,208 crore and will have 14 stations. While the 18.5-km Metro 2A will have 17
stations and cost around Rs6,410 crore.

The MMRDA has also given in to the demands of the citizens and plans to extend Metro-7 corridor up to Mira-Bhayandar. The extension will have 10 stations and is expected to cost Rs6,518 crore. “To provide seamless connectivity, there will be some direct trains from Andheri (East) to Mira-Bhayandar,” said Madan.
