In photos: The four canine heroes of the Mumbai police

After serving the Mumbai police for a decade, the four dogs retired in May 2015

The four canines that played a key role in the 26/11 terror attack operations in 2008 have died. HT looks at the four members of the dog squad, which helped the Mumbai police detect explosives and minimise casualties in the attack which killed more than 160 people and injured 300.

The four dogs were sent to a private farm in Virar, where they died within a few months of each other. (Fizzah Shah)

After serving the Mumbai police for a decade, the four dogs retired in May 2015 and were sent to a private farm in Virar, where they died within a few months of each other.

The dogs helped solve many crimes in Mumbai by assisting countless searches. They were part of operations conducted during the 2006 serial blasts and 2011 blasts.

The dog squad members

1. Caesar

Caesar died in October. An active canine, his favourite foods were chicken and rice, biscuits, and branded dog food. He recovered 8kgs of RDX from the Taj Hotel area during the 2008 terror attack

Tiger died in July. A strong and active member of the squad, he loved playing with balls.He helped the Mumbai police detect bombs in Colaba during the 2008 terror attack

3. Sultan

Sultan died in June. Playful, he loved running around the farm. He helped the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad detect RDX and other explosives in the city during the 2008 terror attack.

4. Max

Max died in April. Like his teammates, he was playful and lively. He found 25 hand grenades in the Taj Hotel reception.
