A driver, 42, was killed after a three-storey building collapsed in Bhiwandi, Thane, early on Friday. He was sleeping in the 55-year-old building ‘Kalim Momin’ located on Khadak Road.

During the collapse, the building was empty as almost 47 families had vacated it a month ago after getting the eviction notice from the Bhiwnadi Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC), which had declared it dangerous.
Sunil Zhalke, PRO of the BNMC, said, “The building was declared dangerous and the 47 families were evacuated safely long back and the building was due for demolition.”
“The front part of the building collapsed and killed the driver who used to sleep in the empty building every night. The deceased was a resident of Shantinagar and due to family problems he used to spend night in the building,” added Zhalke
“We are acting on all the dangerous structures in the city by asking residents to vacate them,” officials said.
