Mumbai commute to get smoother, 17 firms queue up to build trans-harbour link

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will help you get to the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust faster

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Wednesday received bids from 17 companies for the construction of the 22-km Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL).

Consortia such as Afcons-FLUOR-SPCPL, Daweoo-TATA, HCC-SKECL, IL&FS-TNL, Larsen & Toubro, Simplex, NCC, J Kumar have bid for the three-phase construction of the India’s longest proposed sea link. Senior MMRDA officials said that the financial bids would be opened after evaluating technical bids, following which the contract would be awarded. ​ The first two phases involve building sea-bridge components, while the third will see construction of a road up to Chirle.

The sea bridge will be 16.5-km-long, while the road will be 3.813-km-long. Once completed, the link will provide faster connectivity to the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and other highways going to Pune and Goa. The sea link will also help develop parts of Navi Mumbai, Raigad district and its surrounding areas.

​ MMRDA, which has already commenced the bidding procedure for the 22-km link that will connect Sewri in island city and Nhava Sheva on the mainland, is expected to start ground work by December.

​ The construction of the link has been divided into three parts. The first two packages are sea-bridge components, while the third includes construction of a road up to Chirle. The sea bridge will be 16.5-km long, while the road will be 3.813-km long.
