Mumbai man cheated of ₹19,000 in telemarketing fraud

A 37-year-old man was allegedly cheated of Rs19,140 by a woman who got his credit card details through a 24-minute telemarketing call on Thursday.

A complaint was registered by the Goregaon resident at the Ghatkopar police station. According to the police, the woman called the man and identified herself as an employee of the bank, which had issued the complainant a credit card.

“The woman told him that she wants to redeem reward points. She told him that his outstanding balance will be settled with the points,” said a police officer. The accused then sought the credit card details and also the one-time password (OTP) for a fraudulent online transaction worth Rs19,140.

According to the police, the man later realised he had ben cheated, following which he registered a case with the Ghatkopar police. The police have registered a case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 420 for cheating along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.

The police stated that such scamsters use new methods to con people. To tackle with the increasing number of cybercrimes, the state government has sanctioned four cyber cells, 186 police staff and a cyber-training centre.
