NCP members bury hatchet after Nawab-Patil clash in Deonar

The police had filed the cases under sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to attempt to murder and rioting, as well as under sections of the Arms Act

Sources said the two Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders who filed cases against each other after the clash that broke out during a party meet at Deonar on November 29, have reportedly resolved the issue. The police said they are thus unsure what the outcome of the cases will be.

Police sources said that according to allegations by party members, NCP leader Sanjay Dina Patil’s supporters had arrived at the venue, following which, a spat ensued between Patil, NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik, and their supporters.

Party sources alleged that Patil and his supporters stepped on the stage, brandishing sharp weapons. They threatened the guests and fired a few rounds in the air. Patil’s supporters, in turn, alleged that Malik’s supporters tried to injure them.

Malik and Patil levelled allegations against each other. The two registered complaints with the police, naming each other as the accused.

The police had filed the cases under sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to attempt to murder and rioting, as well as under sections of the Arms Act.

Police sources said the cases are weak and will not hold up in court. “The outcome of such cases depends on their merit. As the people involved in these cases were injured, we will decide upon a further course of action,” said a police officer privy to the investigation.
