A wheelchair-bound passenger was caught trying to smuggle gold bars worth Rs19.80 lakh at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) on Wednesday, officials said.

The accused used a wheelchair to dodge customs, according to officials. The air intelligence unit (AIU) intercepted Nimisha Jentilal Gudhka, 38, who arrived from Dubai. “He was found with eight gold bars worth Rs19.80 lakh inside his pant pocket and wallet,” said a senior AIU officer.

According to another officer. he was not arrested as the value of the seized gold was less than Rs20 lakh,

According to officials, Gudhka is from Jamnagar in Gujrat and runs electronics and furniture businesses in Rwanda.

In another case, AIU recovered five foreign-marked gold bars worth Rs34.80 lakh from two unclaimed packets wrapped with black adhesive tape. The packets, which were found in a flight that arrived from Dubai, were concealed in a cavity behind a mirror in the rear toilet of the flight, officials said.

“Each packet contained five foreign-marked gold bars valued at Rs. 34.80 lakh,” said the officer. The police suspect that someone was to retrieve the packets. A case has been registered.

In another case, AIU officers seized 12 gold bars worth Rs59.94 lakh from a flight that arrived from Bangkok. A passenger — Ravikiran Ghanshyambhai Gohel, 35 — a resident of Anand in Gujarat was intercepted, officials said.
