Segregate, treat your waste by June 1 or won’t collect it, BMC tells 227 South Bombay places

MUMBAI CITY NEWS: Each of these places generate more than 100kg waste every day. BMC made the move as the dumping grounds in the city have reached bursting point and continue to receive around 1,800 metric tonnes of unprocessed waste everyday.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday sent a notice to 227 restaurants, five-star hotels, government institutes, movie theatres and other establishments in South Mumbai that it would not would not collect their garbage from June 1, if they do not segregate it.

Each of these places generate more than 100kg waste every day. The civic body took the decision as the dumping grounds in the city have already over-reached their capacity as around 1,800 metric tonnes of unprocessed waste is dumped at these sites daily.

A source at the civic body said that to reduce the quantity of waste that is sent to the dumping grounds, the A ward office identified 227 structures that generated over 100kg of waste every day and issued notices to them to treat waste at source. The BMC urged them to introduce vermi-compost, bio-methanation, waste converter or any other similar process within their premises. These structures include government institutes, restaurants, five-star hotels and sports clubs to commercial and residential complexes in A ward.

Last year, the civic body had to face serious flak from the high court as they did not manage their waste properly. The court then halted all the construction work in the city unless the civic body managed its waste properly.

Kiran Dighavkar, the assistant municipal commissioner of A ward, confirmed the development and said, “We identified the bulk waste generators in our ward and issued them with notices to treat wet waste at source as per the solid waste management rules 2016.”
