Shapoorji Pallonji, city-based engineering and construction firm, will build the Dr BR Ambedkar memorial on a Dadar plot that houses the now-defunct Indu Mills.

The design for the memorial, to be constructed on 12 acres of land at Indu Mills in Dadar, includes a 350-foot-high statue of Dr Ambedkar, a library, a replica of the historic Chavdar pond in Raigad, a number of viewing points for the memorial, and a parking lot. (HT FILE)

An executive committee of the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) — the nodal authority for the project — announced its decision on Wednesday.

Last week, HT had reported that the project would be awarded to Shapoorji Pallonji — the sole bidder — at 14% more than MMRDA’s estimated cost of Rs622 crore. The memorial will now cost Rs709 crore.

“The teachings of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar have been a blessing for our generation and will continue to impact future generations. It is our privilege to further his legacy through this grand memorial,” said UPS Madan, metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.

Formed in 1865, Shapoorji Pallonji has engineered and constructed several landmarks structures in the country and abroad, including the Reserve Bank of India’s old and new buildings in south Mumbai, the World Trade Centre at Cuffe Parade, Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai Central railway station, Sultan of Oman Palace, seat of government and presidency in Ghana and Citibank’s India headquarters at Bandra-Kurla Complex.
