Thane woman files case against husband for divorcing her through letter

A 20-year-old woman has lodged a case against her husband for giving her instant ‘talak’ through post.

She has also filed a case against her in-laws, alleging that they harassed and tortured her demanding Rs50,000 or a two-wheeler as dowry.

The woman, a resident of Bhiwandi, got married on in 2016.

She has complained that she was also was beaten up. “After continuous harassment, she went to live with her parents after six months of her marriage.”

On November 15, 2016, the woman got a letter from her husband, in which he had written ‘talak’ thrice.

Her husband Sardar Ahmed, in his 20s, works in a private firm.

The woman approached a redressal forum. “She was counselled but the woman lodged a case,” said K Jadhav, senior police inspector from Shantinagar police station.

Jadhav added, “We have not arrested anyone as both the parties will be called to record their statement.”

Instant triple talak has been declared illegal by the Supreme Court.
