Three new farmers’ markets will be open on weekdays

Markets will come up at Kurla, Borivli and Bandra

Three more farmers’ markets will be set up in parts of Mumbai and its suburbs by mid-November. These markets will also be operational on weekdays, as opposed to the existing markets, which are operational only on Sunday mornings.

One weekly market will be held at Kamgaar Nagar, Kurla (East) on Saturdays. Another will be held at Vaziranaka, Borivli (West) on Tuesdays and another at Bandra reclamation, MHADA ground on Saturdays.

Farmers’ markets have also been set up at Vidhan Bhavan, Hutatma Chowk, Churchgate and Worli.

HT had earlier reported that the state government aims to start about 100 weekly markets in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai by December. It has already given permission for six markets in Mumbai, seven in Navi Mumbai and 17 in Thane.

After permitting farmers to sell their produce directly to retailers and consumers by amending the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees Act in July, the government has stepped up its efforts to help the farmers’ produce reach consumers.

“Farmers’ markets have cheaper vegetables as compared to retail markets. The produce too is of superior quality,” said Khanderao Mapari, a Nashik-based farmer.

While vegetables such as brinjal, french beans, bitter gourd and lady fingers are priced at Rs60-Rs80 in retail markets, they cost Rs40 at farmers markets. Cauliflower costs Rs20 and cabbage, Rs10 at these markets.

The state plans to start 21 such markets in different parts of Mumbai and has applied to various agencies seeking permission. “We have applied to the traffic, police and fire department for permission,” added Mane.
