The Maharashtra government plans to open the bunker at the office-cum-residence of governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao at Malabar Hill to visitors. The 13 rooms in the 150-m long bunker, presumed to be used for storing arms and ammunition by the British, are likely to give visitors a glimpse into the lives of national leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Mahatma Phule and Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

The bunker was discovered on August 12, 2016, while demolishing a temporary wall blocking the entrance.

Rao discussed the plans with state tourism minister Jaykumar Rawal last week.

“We will develop the bunker to boost tourism. Each of the 13 rooms will be dedicated to various national leaders,” Rawal told HT, adding one of the rooms will be restored the way it was used by the British.

The tourism minister said they have got the report of a structural audit of the bunker and will make changes to the structure accordingly.
