The aim is to reduce traffic at two narrow junctions – Hotel Regency junction and Teli Gali junction – in the vicinity. The estimated cost of the project is 100 crore and the work is expected to be completed within 24 months.

Blaming the traffic department, a senior civic official from the bridges department said, “The BMC had issued the work order in April 2016. We submitted a plan to the traffic police to get a no-objection certificate, but they kept rejecting it on the grounds that the work on Mumbai Metro was on. Despite repeated follow-ups, we didn’t get any response until last week.”

The traffic department said Metro work was being carried out on a road parallel to Teli Gali.

Amitesh Kumar, joint commissioner of police (traffic), said, “Allowing two works on a road would have affected the traffic. We gave permission to start work after the monsoon, as we were assured that traffic will not be affected. Metro work is still on, but the barricades have been moved in to make more space for vehicles.”
