BMC to use sewage water for Deonar dump project

Civic officials said 2 to 4 mld water will be supplied from a sewage treatment plant in Ghatkopar to save drinking water

Mumbai: As the city reels under a 20% water cut, the civic body has decided to use water from a sewerage treatment plant for a waste-to-energy project at the Deonar dumping ground.

The project needs two to four mld water, as suggested by the consultants drafting the detailed project report (DPR) and instead of wasting drinking water, it will come from a sewage treatment plant in Ghatkopar, said civic officials.

Sanjay Mukherjee, said, “We have decided to supply water needed for the Deonar waste-to-energy project from the Ghatkopar’s treatment plant. This will help us conserve lot of water.”

Meanwhile, the civic body is looking at finalising the DPR for the project by next month and has plans to float tenders to appoint contractors for processing waste at Deonar by June. The civic body last week has also demarcated the 15 hectares of a plot inside the dumping ground that will be needed for setting up the plant.

Owing to unscientific dumping of waste at Deonar and Mulund dumping grounds over the years, the civic body had to face flak from the high court which stopped the civic body from issuing any new intimation of disapproval or commencement certificates last month.

There have been various incidents of fire that were reported at Deonar and Mulund since January which speeded up the process of appointing contractors. On Friday, Sachin Tendulkar too met civic chief Ajoy Mehta to discuss the issues related to Deonar dumping ground.
