The city streets may soon resemble the tree-lined boulevards of many western countries.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to beautify certain major roads by planting trees along the road length, landscaping the central medians on roads and developing showcase traffic islands by July.
“We have identified five road stretches, which we want to beautify on a private basis. This beautification will be on a sponsorship basis where the organisation that undertakes the beautification will get advertising space,” MMRDA spokesperson Dilip Kawathkar said.
The roads include the stretch between the Kalanagar flyover to Andheri flyover and Kalanagar flyover to Bandra-Worli sea link, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, Bandra-Kurla main link road from Kalanagar junction to LBS Marg and the internal roads of BKC.
MMRDA will not undertake this beautification on its own. It is looking for parties who can beautify this stretch for advertising space to display their logo.
The authority has already called for an Expression of Interest from interested parties. The sponsor will have to maintain this stretch for a five-year period.
“The sponsor can display their corporate logo every 30 metres on this stretch. No product advertisement will be allowed,” Kawathkar added.
