Mumbai may get a new medical college this year. The Centre on Monday gave its nod for the setting up of a medical college at the Dr RN Cooper Hospital, Juhu, which was upgraded and revamped on a large scale around two years ago.

However, the hospital still awaits a mandatory inspection by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The medical college will accommodate 150 students and if all goes well with the inspection, it may begin admissions from this academic year itself.

The MCI inspection was supposed to be conducted last year itself, said sources in the BMC’s public health department

Sources in the department said the letter of permission to start the medical college was issued by the Central government on Monday.

The hospital has put together a team of 150 teaching and non-teaching staff at present. The medical college will also run a rural health training centre (RHTC) in Middle Vaitarna. The RHCT will be run and managed by the medical college, where students will doing their mandatory rural internships.

“We are planning to start the medical college from this June. There are certain procedures that need to be completed before the academic session can commence,” said Sanjay Deshmukh, additional municipal commissioner, who heads the civic health department.

Mumbai is the only city in the country to have its own set of civic hospitals and medical colleges.
