AR Rahman thought Mohenjo Daro would be a ‘boring’ documentary

AR Rahman, who has composed the music for Ashutosh Gowarikar’s new film Mohenjo Daro, says he initially thought the film would be a boring documentary.

Music director AR Rahman has revealed how he thought Mohenjo Daro, Bollywood director Ashutosh Gowarikar’s new film, would be a “boring” historical documentary, when the director first told him about it.

At a media interaction for the film, as Gowariker asked Rahman how he had managed to come with a good album for the film, he replied: “Initially when you said ‘Mohenjo Daro’ I thought it’s going to be like a historic documentary, it’s going to be so boring.

“But then when you showed me all the pictures, it really inspired me. So I was trying to go to that zone and unearth with my imagination.”

Asked by Gowariker how he managed to keep diverse cultures blended, considering his music for Hollywood films, Indian films and the South American style music he gave for the recent film Pele: Birth of a Legend, Rahman said: “I used to do it better before, I can’t do it anymore; I am getting older. I want to go deeper into things.

“We are connected as human beings; we all have the same emotions, love, sadness, anger, romance and dreams, so I tap on to that universal factor of an emotion and the rest of it is just covering, it’s sweetening, but the core of connecting all of us is the same. It’s incredible.”

Mohenjo Daro releases on August 12.
