Bollywood does not give you fans: Musician-rapper Raftaar

Rapper-musician Raftaar says he made his fan base because of independent music and not because of Bollywood.

He has been quite successful in Bollywood , but when it comes to fans, musician-rapper Raftaar prefers those who enjoy his independent music. The 27-year-old feels that people listening to Bollywood music aren’t loyal, and will “listen to anything,” as long as it’s popular.

“Bollywood doesn’t give you fans, independent music does. Fans who listen to independent music are so crazy and passionate about a musician. They get tattoos done and write your name on their walls. That’s passion and loyalty,” he says.

Raftaar adds, “With Bollywood, everyone concentrates on the song and not the artists. Everyone will enjoy the song and listen to it as long as it’s a hit . Sometimes, they don’t even know who’s the artist who created it. That’s why you cannot expect passionate fans in Bollywood.”

To maintain a connect between Bollywood and independent music, the Kerala-born musician stays in Delhi. “I have been living in Delhi all this while because my parents live here. Plus, I never wanted to move to Mumbai in the first place, because I wanted to be in touch with my independent music and my Punjabi fans. Had I stayed in Mumbai, I’d have lost that touch with them and would have been stuck with Bollywood. I didn’t want to do that,” he says.
