Everybody wins: Indie artists, B’wood are benefiting from each other

Saturday Saturday, Angreji Beat and Chull may have had a fan following before, but after making it to Bollywood, these songs have become a rage making the singers household names and also serving as crowd pullers for films that they feature in.

Rapper Badshah, whose song Saturday Saturday made it to Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014), now has another popular number Kar Gayi Chull in the upcoming Kapoor & Sons. A hit number creates a buzz, says Badshah, adding, “But you have to be careful that it doesn’t misfire. Fans are attached to the song and Bollywood tries to rework the work.”

Singer-actor, Gippy tells us, “The song became bigger after it was picturised on Saif and Deepika. I feel the benefit is both ways. Bahut gaane aur bhi aa rahe hai.”

While Rahat Fateh Ali Khan calls it a ‘phase’, singer Manj feels it’s because of the growth independent music has witnessed. Mahi Aaja too made it into Singh is Bliing last year, singer-songwriter Manj, who also sang the original, says, “Few years ago everything was Bollywood. Independent music has now caught the attention of music producers as well.”

Hit songs are not just being incorporated in films but are also being recreated by different artists. Amaal Mallik has recreated many tracks, the most recent being Soch Na Sake from Airlift with Arijit Singh and Tulsi Kumar from B Praak, Jaani & Hardy Sandhu’s Soch.

“For those who know it, if they hear it again, it is like a new version. It’s also tough because everyone is used to the original. I always add something of me in it,” adds Amaal.
